Do Maine Coons Shed? The Honest Truth About Grooming
One of the most common questions I get from families wanting to adopt a European Maine Coon is: "Are they going to cover my house in cat hair?"
When you look at a Maine Coon with its massive lion's mane, incredibly bushy tail, and shaggy coat, it's easy to assume they are a grooming nightmare. Here is the honest truth about Maine Coon shedding and how much maintenance they actually require.
Yes, Maine Coons Shed
There is no getting around it—Maine Coons have a lot of hair, and they do shed. However, they do not shed exactly the way a short-haired domestic cat or a Golden Retriever does. Their coat is uniquely designed.
The Two-Layer Coat
Maine Coons have a semi-longhair, water-resistant double coat that originally evolved to protect them from harsh New England winters. The top layer is silky and slightly oily (to repel snow and rain), while the undercoat is soft and downy.
Most of their shedding happens seasonally. In the spring, they will "blow their coat" to prepare for warmer weather, losing much of their thick winter undercoat. You will notice increased shedding during this transition period. During the rest of the year, their shedding is surprisingly manageable.
How to Manage It: The 5-Minute Rule
You do not need to take a Maine Coon to a professional groomer every month. The secret is consistency.
- Comb them twice a week: A quick 5-minute session with a stainless steel greyhound comb (focusing on the armpits, belly, and behind the ears where mats form) is usually all it takes.
- Use a slicker brush during shedding season: In the spring, using a slicker brush will help pull out the loose undercoat before it ends up on your furniture.
Are They Hypoallergenic?
No. Maine Coons are not hypoallergenic. If you or a family member has severe cat allergies, a Maine Coon will trigger them. However, a high-quality diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids will keep their skin healthy, reducing dander (which is the actual cause of most cat allergies, not the hair itself).
