How Long Do Maine Coons Live? Understanding Their Health

Bringing a Maine Coon into your family is a massive commitment. Because they grow so slowly (taking up to 5 years to reach full size) and bond so deeply with their owners, families naturally want to know: how long will my Maine Coon live?

    The Average Maine Coon Lifespan

With proper care, high-quality nutrition, and an indoor-only lifestyle, a healthy Maine Coon typically lives between 12 to 15 years, with many living well into their late teens.

    The Importance of Genetics

The lifespan of a Maine Coon is heavily dictated by how they were bred. Because of their giant size, the breed is genetically predisposed to a few specific health conditions. This is why buying from a "backyard breeder" who doesn't test their cats is incredibly risky.

The two biggest genetic threats to a Maine Coon's lifespan are:

    • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): This is a heart condition that causes the heart walls to thicken. It is the most common heart disease in cats. Ethical breeders (like us at Rare Maine Coons) DNA test for the HCM mutation AND have certified veterinary cardiologists perform echocardiograms on all breeding cats to ensure their hearts are healthy.
    • Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA): A genetic disease affecting the muscles. We DNA test to ensure no kitten will ever inherit this.

    How to Maximize Their Lifespan

If you buy a healthy kitten from tested European lines, the rest is largely up to you.

    1. Keep them indoors. Outdoor cats face threats from cars, predators, and diseases. An indoor Maine Coon has a significantly longer life expectancy.
    2. High-protein, high-moisture diet. Kidney disease is common in all older cats. Feeding a diet high in wet food or raw meat protects their kidneys over the long term.
    3. Watch their weight. While they are meant to be giant, they shouldn't be obese. Overfeeding puts strain on their hips and joints, potentially leading to arthritis or hip dysplasia later in life.
